Design systems that survive contact with a real product team
Most design systems die within a year. The ones that live share four properties.

A design system is a product with internal customers. If it is not maintained like one, it becomes an archive of screenshots.
Tokens must be the single source of truth, consumed identically by design tools and code. Any value hardcoded in a component is a future inconsistency.
Components should encode decisions, not options. A button with fourteen props is a design system that has given up on having a point of view.
Finally, measure adoption. If teams keep building one-off components, the system is failing them, not the other way round.
